In classical architecture, rustication is a range of masonry techniques giving visible surfaces a finish that contrasts in texture with the smoothly finished, squared-block masonry surfaces. Vermiculated rustication is an idiosyncratic form of rustication intended to evoke the appearance of worm tunnels through soil. A good example of vermiculated rustication can be found on the columns of the Somerset House's south facade in London facing the Thames.
