Building Tour: McGrath Road with Peter Barber Architects [12.30PM]

McGrath Road comprises of 26 little tower houses, creating a beautiful street corner in East London with a central tree-lined courtyard. Houses have double height arcaded frontages, 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms and a top floor living room and roof terrace. Each house has a deeply recessed arcaded frontage where people can choose to sit out at the street edge.

The houses are a radical reworking of the “back of pavement terraces” and “back to back” house types. Back to back housing was the default typology for low cost high density housing in many northern and midland industrial cities during their rapid expansion in the nineteenth century. They had a great many benefits. They were cheap to build and therefore relatively inexpensive to rent, they were arranged along streets and in courts which assisted in creating the potential for neighbourliness. They delivered reasonably high density while providing people with a house rather than a flat.
