Join us on Sunday 25th January for a tour of 66 Camden Square.
This project draws on themes that Peter Bell and Richard MacCormac had previously explored in their design for a house on Langton Way, Blackheath (1976), notably the use of a rigorously maintained 3m x 3m grid. Bell bought the site in 1980 but subsequently sold it to his colleague Rodger Davis, who realised Bell’s design, with some modifications, for his family’s occupation.
A wall of reclaimed brick extends around both street frontages to a height of 2m, a recess at the east providing cover to the front door and garage. Above this datum, the house is revealed as a lightweight timber frame, extensively infilled with glass, some of which is coloured, and surmounted by a flat, fractionally project-ing roof. The visitor is initially admitted to a single-storey volume that is treated as a richly planted conservatory and looks out onto the courtyard. At the end of this passage, a short flight of steps provides access to the house proper, which is configured over two storeys and occupies a 9m x 9m footprint on the corner of the site. The change of level is sufficient to provide the ground floor with views onto the street while preserving the privacy of
the occupants.
