AF Tour: Appleby Blue
Join us on Saturday 9th March at 11am for a Tour of Witherford Watson Mann's Appleby Blue, an almshouse re-imagined for 21st century living.
The social housing development for over 65-year-olds, designed by Witherford Watson Mann for United St Saviour’s Charity, provides independent yet collective living. Reinventing the historic model of an almshouse, the building has been designed to encourage residents and non-residents to come together, extending from the busy high street to more intimate walkways. A community kitchen hosts intergenerational culinary events that bring together residents and the wider Southwark community.
The mid-rise development, which varies from five to two storeys, offers a number of public-facing facilities, including the generous double-height Garden Room. All apartments, one- and two-bedroom, 11 wheelchair-accessible, are dual aspect and arranged around the sanctuary-like space of the lushly planted Garden Court, which forms the visual focus at the centre of the building. A library area, activities rooms and a roof terrace with raised beds for recreational gardening collectively aim to improve residents’ health, wellbeing and social connectedness.
Tour led by United St Saviour’s Charity and Witherford Watson Mann.
