It makes visible Homerton College’s unique mission and social purpose, and its commitment to inclusivity. It is an open and generous building in the round using a distinctive palette of natural materials such as the striking handcrafted faience facade. It addresses the challenge of relating to its four very different aspects: embracing the college grounds to the south and east, meeting the adjacent Grade II-listed Arts and Crafts-style Ibberson Building (1914), as well as creating a range of informal social spaces around its perimeter – from courtyards and cloisters, to generous thresholds with seating hewn into the façade – inviting chance encounters and moments of interaction for staff and students alike. Inside the generous timber structured hall provides daily dining for students, staff and visitors, together with hosting formal dinners and a variety of events. The new buttery offers a more informal café throughout the day, affording students an alternative setting for socialising and study. In this recently completed project, the previously blank street-front has been opened up and transformed with new entrances and openings, serving an enlarged cafe and events space, a new rehearsal room, coffee roasters and loading bay. The connection to the main spaces has been widened and loosened, the management office relocated to open up a generous foyer, and a roof terrace has been added. The new construction elements tooth in to existing brickwork, resonate with the existing palette of stock brick and cor-ten steel, and rhyme with the layered streetscape of Union Street.

Images: David Grandorge

Location and Time:

Date and Time: 09:30-11:00, Saturday 16th August

Address: 171 Union St, London SE1 0LN

Accessibility:

This tour will involve short periods of walking and standing, as the group moves through the project. Bell bought the site in 1980 but subsequently sold it to his colleague Rodger Davis, who realised Bell’s design, with some modifications, for his family’s occupation.

A wall of reclaimed brick extends around both street frontages to a height of 2m, a recess at the east providing cover to the front door and garage. Above this datum, the house is revealed as a lightweight timber frame, extensively infilled with glass, some of which is coloured, and surmounted by a flat, fractionally project-ing roof. The visitor is initially admitted to a single-storey volume that is treated as a richly planted conservatory and looks out onto the courtyard. At the end of this passage, a short flight of steps provides access to the house proper, which is configured over two storeys and occupies a 9m x 9m footprint on the corner of the site.
